I have visited the USA many times and I photographed extensively, spanning four decades. This selection includes photographs from the east and west coast, Florida (my dad lived there) and several other places.

In 1984 I sailed down the east coast with my dad, uncle and a friend, stopping off in several coastal backwaters that showed a different side to America. My dad and uncle had sailed from Fort Lauderdale in Florida up to Annapolis in Maryland to meet us, we having flown to New York, then by Greyhound bus to Annapolis. We sailed for 4 weeks, fighting the Gulf stream and fierce heat / humidity, docking in small places every night.

In 1989 on the last leg of a round the world trip, I drove with my girlfriend (now wife) across America in a ‘drive away’ car, delivering it to Florida. Starting in LA, up to San Francisco via Route One, then across to Las Vegas, down through Texas, gradually aiming south east to Fort Lauderdale. We bought a cheap tent and camped when possible staying in cheap motels when not.

Between 1993 and 2018 in my role as a lecturer in an art department we would organise a biennial trip to New York for students. Staying in Manhattan, we walked from gallery to museum to gallery in small specialist groups and on the way photographed things based on each student’s personal ideas. Over the years this gave me a large collection of colour and black and white images of my own.
